A Dream Comes True

Roberta Kendall wrote: It was a few years after my mom (Millie Kendall) had passed. I was stressed and worried about my son.....He was very upset as he wasn't able to find work. I went to bed praying for him and asked God to please help him find employment......I never dreamt about my ma, but that night I did. In the dream, I was out in my huge backyard and suddenly my mom appeared, walked past me calmly and in her way that she had said, "He's going to be alright, Roberta" and she was gone........It gave me such peace. Later that day, I had forgotten about the dream with everyday goings on, until my son came home and was overjoyed with the news that he had found a job! I'll never forget that. It makes me feel blessed and loved every time I think of it. I miss her every day--her laugh, advice, prayers, and love. She was the best mom and was a preacher's wife for over 50 years.

The picture is of Millie Kendall holding Roberta when she was a baby.

Your Inalienable Right to Grieve

As if losing someone you love isn’t bad enough, family and friends can actually contribute to making the grief process even worse.  How?  By asking, “Aren’t you done yet?”  By that they mean, “Aren’t you done crying or talking about your loved one?”  “Aren’t you ready to come out and have some fun?”  The list goes on and on.

What people don’t realize is that grief takes time—your time—not theirs—and they need to understand it.  But they probably won’t.  So, what should you do?  There are a number of choices.  One is to let them know kindly (or otherwise) that it’s none of their business.  However, if someone is really saying it out of true concern, then you may want to consider counseling.  Just remember—learn to take care of yourself during this time and if you need the help of a professional, by all means, get it.

There is another thing that could happen during the grief process.  You may become more spiritually aware.  You may meet new people who truly understand you and try to help during this time.  You might learn that by taking “baby steps,” each day you are moving toward a new perspective and allowing healing to take place.

Loving blessings to you,

Cindy Adkins

National Angels at My Door Day

National Angels at My Door Day is celebrated each year on August 27th, the first year being 2015.  The day has been recorded in the International Date Registry.

This day was founded by author Cindy Adkins of Louisiana.  The purpose of the day is commemorate loved ones who have passed on and to reflect on what they mean to us.  For those who are going through the grief process, it is a day to allow healing to take place.  "Having had this blog, as well as my Facebook page, Angels at My Door, it became increasingly clear to me that there is a great need for a day of reflection, as well as a 'celebration of life' honoring those who have passed on," said Adkins.

A single white rose is the symbol of the day as white roses represent everlasting love--love that endures beyond the grave.

In commemoration of this day, participants are asked to light a candle for their deceased loved one at home and to post a picture of them on whichever social media sites they participate in, i.e. Facebook, Instagram, etc.  It is not a federally recognized holiday.
